FTP instructions

The ftpd server on this machine supports the following conversion
operations when you retrieve (get) files from this machine:

  1. Automatic compression:
If you want to retrieve a file named "foo.bar" in compressed form,
	type:
		get foo.bar.Z (for unix compress)
or	get foo.bar.gz (for GNU zip)
and the file will be compressed before it is sent to you as
	"foo.bar.Z" or "foo.bar.gz".

  2. Automatic uncompression:
If you want to retrieve a compressed file "foo.bar.Z" or
	"foo.bar.gz" in uncompressed form, type:
		get foo.bar
and the file will be uncompressed before it is sent to you as file
	"foo.bar".

  3. Automatic tar (and compression) of directories:
If you want to retrieve an entire directory named "testdata"
(and all of its contents) as a Unix tar file, type:
		get testdata.tar
	  or	get testdata.tar.Z
	  or	get testdata.tar.gz
and you will received the entire contents of "testdata" directory
in the file name that you specified.

For PC users who can not specify names that differ from what is in the ftp directories, try winzip95.exe to uncompress UNIX files.
