Non-technical Summary

The purpose of this program is to establish a continuously operating network of permanently installed Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers in central and northern California to determine the distribution of deformation across the Pacific-North America plate boundary, and interseismic strain accumulation along the major fault systems. The network also monitors deformation before, during, and after large earthquakes occurring along the San Andreas fault system, particularly in the San Francisco Bay area, to help rapidly determine the extent of fault rupture for hazard assessment and emergency response management.
