February 2003 Commentary
- 27 February 2003, 18:21 PST
A mild earthquake occurred at 06:21 PM PST on Thursday evening, February
27. This epicenter was about 9 miles WNW of Petrolia. The local magnitude
for this event is 3.1 (ML).
- 25 February 2003, 08:37 PST
A mild earthquake occurred at 08:37 AM PST on Tuesday morning, February
25. This epicenter was located off the coast of Northern California
about 47 miles WNW of Punta Gorda. The local magnitude for this
earthquake is 3.8 (ML).
- 22 February 2003, 14:00 PST
Early this morning, a moderate earthquake rattled southern
California. The ML 5.4 earthquake struck at 4:19 AM local
time and was followed by a number of strong aftershocks.
The CISN Southern California Management Center has issued
preliminary report
on the earthquake and it is described in the
Caltech commentary.
The largest aftershock of this earthquake, to date, occurred at
08:03 PM PST on Monday Evening, February 24. The local magnitude
for this event, averaged over the Berkeley Network, is 4.8 (ML);
Caltech reported a magnitude of 4.6.
- 18 February 2003, 19:32 PST
A large earthquake occurred at 07:32 PM on Tuesday evening,
February 18, 2003. This epicenter was located about 2,200 miles NW of
Berkeley in the Unimac Island Region, Alaska. The surface wave magnitude
for this earthquake, averaged over the Berkeley Network, is 6.6 (Ms).
The U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center
published a moment magnitude of 6.6 (Mw) for the event.
- 18 February 2003, 06:44 PST
A mild to moderate earthquake occurred at 06:44 AM on Tuesday morning,
February 18, 2003. This epicenter was located off the coast of Northern
California about 44 miles WNW of Eureka. The local magnitude for this
earthquake is 3.8 (ML). The moment magnitude, determined at Berkeley,
is 4.3 (Mw).
- 16 February 2003, 08:43 PST
A small earthquake occurred at 08:43 AM on Sunday morning,
February 16, 2003. This epicenter was located at Pacifica, 12 miles SW
of San Francisco City Hall. The local magnitude of this earthquake is
only 2.9 (ML), but it was reported felt at several points throughout
the Peninsula.
- 10 February 2003, 10:10 PST
A mild earthquake occurred at 10:10 AM on Monday morning, February 10, 2003.
This epicenter was located about 9 miles NW of San Benito. The local magnitude
for the earthquake is 3.3 (ML).
- 9 February 2003, 13:12 PST
A mild earthquake occurred at 1:12 PM on Sunday afternoon, February 9, 2003.
This epicenter was located about 3 miles SW of Gilroy. The local magnitude
for the earthquake is 3.4 (ML). It was accompanied by a handful of small events.
- 4 February 2003, 10:35 - 5 February 08:33 PST
A short sequence of small earthquakes occurred along the Hayward Fault
stretching from Milpitas (10:35 AM, MD=2.1), Oakland (11:48 PM, MD=1.4),
Berkeley (00:30 AM, MD=2.6; 08:33 AM, MD=1.9). We didn't feel any of
these events ... although the 2.6 set off our simple "seismic alarm"
which sent pages to our on-duty staff.
- 2 February 2003, 02:31-24:00 PST
A swarm of 29 small to moderate earthquakes occurred in the area about 2 miles
NNW of Dublin, and about 3 miles SE of San Ramon, CA, on Sunday, February 2, 2003.
These events began with a magnitude 1.9 earthquake at 02:31 AM.
The largest earthquakes in the swarm were a magnitude 4.2 earthquake which occurred
at 10:22 AM, and a magnitude 4.0 event which occurred at 10:47 AM. There were
4 other earthquakes with magnitudes in the range between 3.0-3.6.

- 1 February 2003, 23:45 PST
A mild earthquake occurred at 11:45 PM PST on Saturday night,
February 1, 2003. This epicenter was located about 7 miles N of
Cloverdale. The local magnitude for this event is 3.5.
