- 24-25 March 2003
It is worth noting that overnight, from March 24 and on into March
25, we have been experiencing a swarm of small earthquakes located
along the Hayward Fault in south Berkeley. The closest stations
of the Hayward Fault Network have picked up as many as a couple
of dozen of these events, the largest of them being a magnitude 2.5
earthquake which occurred at on Monday March 24 at 04:56 PM.
Update: More than 30 of these small events had occurred as of mid
day on March 26. Most were recorded at too few stations for calculating
a formal hypocenter, but there location was inferred by the shape
of the wave form and P and S arrivals.
- 24 March 2003, 17:28 PST
A mild earthquake occurred at 05:28 PM on Monday afternoon, March
24. This earhquake was located about 3 miles ESE of The Geysers,

A mild earthquake occurred at 02:44 AM on Wednesday morning, March
19. This earhquake was located about 8 miles NE of Mammoth Lakes. The
local magnitude for this event is 3.2 (ML). This event is the last of
a string of at least 3 small to mild earthquakes, which makes it
difficult to pick the events apart.
- 18 March 2003, 11:27 PST

A moderate earthquake occurred in Southern California about
17 miles NNW of Twentynine Palms. The origin time of the
event was 11:28 AM Tuesday morning, March 11, and the magnitude
averaged over the Berkeley Network is 4.8 (ML). The defining
magnitude reported by the Southern California Seismic Network
was 4.4. The earthquake was reported felt with MM Intensity
(IV) at Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms; (III) at Barstow,
Palm Springs, San Diego and Yucca Valley; it was also felt
at Cathedral City and Hemet.
- 11 March 2003, 03:15 PST
A mild earthquake occurred at 03:15 AM early Tuesday morning,
March 11. This epicenter was located about 6 miles S of San
Juan Bautista and had a magnitude of 3.0 (ML).
- 8 March 2003, 13:00 PST
Yesterday's observation about the lack of large events
was immediately challenged by a magnitude 4.1 (Mw) event
11 km SE of Mammoth Lakes, outside of the caldera.
The event has been followed by a series of small aftershocks,
and a mild event of magnitude 3.4 (ML) which occurred at
09:36 PM on Saturday night, March 8.
This is the first M4 event in this area since 1999. The
USGS Volcano
Hazards Program posts the current conditions at Long
Valley caldera.
- 7 March 2003, 14:11 PST
Although not within Northern California, there was a regional
earthquake located off the Oregon coast about 145 miles west
