April 2003 Commentary
- 30 April 2003, 17:27 PDT
A strong earthquake occurred at 03:27 AM Local Time on May 1 (05:27 PM on April
30, PDT). The epicenter was located in Eastern Turkey about 10 miles N of
Bingol, Turkey. The surface wave magnitude for the event, averaged over the
Berkeley Network, is 6.2 (Ms). The U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake
Information Center (NEIC) published a moment magnitude of 6.4 (Mw) for the
event. Late reports from the region note extensive damage in the Bingol
area; casualties include at least 150 killed and more than 1000 injured.

A mild earthquake occurred at 05:41 AM PDT on Sunday morning, April 27.
This epicenter was located about 13 miles W of Chico, CA. The local magnitude
for this event, averaged over the Berkeley Network, is 3.0.
- 24 April 2003, 17:46 PDT
A mild earthquake which occurred at 05:22 PDT PM on Wednesday afternoon,
April 23. This epicenter was located about 6 miles ESE of The Geysers, South
of Clear Lake, CA. The local magnitude for this event, averaged over the
Berkeley Network is 3.2. There have been two other events in this region
since the above event, both of local magnitude 2.9. The first occurred
at 06:37 PM on Wednesday evening, and the second occurring at 04:39 PM on
Thursday afternoon, April 24, 2003.
- 22 April 2003, 03:46 PDT
A moderate earthquake occurred about 3 miles N of Hydesville and 4 miles
E of Fortuna, CA, at 03:46 AM PDT on Tuesday morning, April 22. This
event had a local magnitude of 3.8 (ML), and a moment magnitude, determined
at Berkeley, of 4.4 (Mw). The mechanism is similar to left-lateral
strike-slip events observed in the Gorda Plate.
Also today, the USGS issued a new report on earthquake probabilites in
the San Francisco Bay Area. The study concludes that the
Bay Area faces a 62% probability
of an M6.7 or higher earthquake between 2003 and 2032.

A mild earthquake occurred at 08:46 AM on Monday morning, April 21.
This epicenter was located about 11 miles NNW of New Idria and 20 miles E
of San Benito, CA. The local magnitude of the event is 3.5.
- 15 April 2003, 18:30 PDT
A mild earthquake occurred about 2 miles ENE of The Geysers at 06:30 PM
on Tuesday evening, April 15. The local magnitude is 3.0 for this event.
- 12 April 2003, 23:53 PDT
A moderate earthquake, located off the coast about 120 miles
WSW of Brookings, Oregon, and 130 miles WNW of Crescent City, occurred
at 11:53 PM on Saturday night. The local magnitude for the event is
4.2. The U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information
Center reported a magnitude of 4.5.

A mild earthquake occurred at 05:59 PM on Friday afternoon which was
located about 12 miles SSE of Tres Pinos. The local magnitude for
the event is 3.1.
- 2 April 2003, 19:38 PST
An M3.4 (ML) earthquake ocurred on Wednesday evening,
off the coast of northern California, approximately
42 mi WNW of Petrolia.
- 1 April 2003, 18:35 PST
It's hard to believe that it is April already! Welcome to Earthquake
Awareness Month in California!
April Fool's Day started off with an M3.2 earthquake
at 06:54 AM. This minor event was located 8 mi east of Milpitas.
Later that day, a small earthquake occurred 15 mi NW of Parkfield at
12:54 PST. The magnitude of this event was 3.1 ML.
