25 June - 13 July 2004

A sequence of small to moderate earthquakes are occurring in the nearby area E of Lakeview, Oregon. An isolated event, Mc=2.5, struck at 02:53 PM on June 4. The sequence began more in ernest on June 24 and has produced at least 11 events of magnitude 3.0 and larger, along with several smaller ones. Two moderate earthquakes, Mw=4.1 at 12:00 AM on June 27, and MW=4.7 at 05:21 AM on June 30, are the largest events so far. The BDSN's Modoc Plateau station, MOD, lies about 31 km south of the center of the sequence; it has produced some excellent broadband records. The strong motion records of the largest shock are displayed here from the MOD station.

Two moderate earthquakes occurred in the region far off the Northern California coast, about 160 miles W of Crescent City. The first event occurred at 10:41 PM and had a moment magnitude determined at Berkeley of Mw=4.8. The second occurred at 10:59 PM and had a moment magnitude Mw=4.9.

17 June 2004, 11:43 PDT

A mild earthquake occurred off the coast of Northern California on Thursday morning, June 17. The epicenter was located about 44 miles WNW of Ferndale. The moment magnitude for the event, determined at Berkeley, is Mw=3.8.

15 June 2004, 15:28 PDT

A moderate earthquake occurred off the Pacific Coast of Baja California on Tuesday afternoon, June 15, about 38 miles WSW of San Diego. The moment magnitude for the event, determined at Berkeley, is Mw=5.0. More information about the event can be found in SCEC's "Commentary" for June, 2004, and the California Integrated Seismic Network news.

10 June 2004, 08:19 PDT

A major earthquake occurred under the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, on Thursday, June 10. This epicenter was located about 53 degrees NW of Berkeley. Its depth was 185 kilometers under the surface. The earthquake had a moment magnitude, determined by the USGS, of Mw=7.0. The event was well recorded over the Berkeley Digital Seismic Network. The suite of vertical records shows the vertically oriented waves as they across all of the stations from north to south in the BDSN Network. The next figure shows the individual phases from the earthquake as recorded by the 3 component instruments at the Jasper Ridge station (JCC). The U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center has much more information of interest about the earthquake.

6 June 2004, 01:40 PDT

A mild earthquake struck the region off the coast about 8 miles SW of San Simeon. The moment magnitude for this event is 3.8.

4 June 2004, 19:46 PDT

A mild earthquake occurred in the region off the coast about 9 miles SW of San Simeon. The local magnitude for this earthquake is 3.6.

3 June 2004, 13:55 PDT

A mild earthquake shook the area about 2 miles N of The Geysers, south of Clear Lake. The local magnitude for this event is 3.5.

3 June 2004, 01:54 PDT

A light earthquake rocked the Lake Tahoe area. The ML 4.5 earthquake was felt in the Reno and Carson City area. This event, epicentered about 6 miles N of Kings Beach, is the largest earthquake to have occurred in this area since a magnitude 5.3 event which happened on October 30, 1998. The CISN has issued a brief news item on the event. .
