December 2004 Commentary
- 27 December, 02:36 PST
A moderate earthquake occurred at 02:36 AM. This epicenter was located
about 6 miles SE of The Geysers, CA. The moment magnitude for the event
is Mw=4.3.
- 26 December, 13:13 PST
A mild earthquake occurred at 01:13 PM. This event was located about
11 miles SE of Quincy, CA. The local magnitude is ML=3.8.
- 25 December, 19:56 PST
A mild earthquake occurred at 07:56 PM. This epicenter was located
about 25 miles E of Lee Vining, CA. The local magnitude is Mw=3.9.
- 25 December, 16:58 PST
A great earthquake occurred at 04:58 PM. This epicenter was located
about 8,750 miles NW of Berkeley in the region off the west coast of
Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The moment magnitude for this event, determined
by Harvard, is Mw=9.0. This earthquake generated a large tsunami that
engulfed the Indian Ocean, and even flowed onto the coasts of eastern
Africa. In the latest accounting by the NEIC (2/23/2005), the earthquake
and tsunami left 283,100 fatalities in its wake, 14,100 others are
still reported missing, and 1,126,900 people were displaced within
10 countries in South Asia and East Africa. The highest intensity
reported for the earthquake was (IX) at Banda Aceh, Northern Sumatra,
which experienced severe damage from both the earthquake and the tsunami.

A mild earthquake occurred at 08:16 PM. This epicenter was located
about 11 miles SSE of Tres Pinos, CA. The moment magnitude is Mw=3.80.
- 12 December, 01:13 PST
A moderate earthquake occurred at 01:38 AM. This epicenter was located
about 17 miles E of Eureka, CA. The moment magnitude is Mw=4.3.
- 4 December, 17:48 PST
A moderate earthquake occurred at 05:48 PM. This event was located
about 19 miles E of Eureka, CA. The moment magnitude is Mw=4.3.
