March 2005 Commentary
- 28 March, 08:09 PST
A great earthquake occurred at 08:09 AM. This epicenter was located
about 8775 miles NW of Berkeley in the region of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The moment magnitude for this event, determined at Harvard, is Mw=8.7.
As of now (4/10/2005) the National Earthquake Information Service reports
1303 people killed, more than 340 injured, and more than 300 buildings
destroyed and many damaged on the islands of Nias, Simuelue, Kepulauan Banyak
and the Meulaboh area, Sumatra. A 3-meter tsunami damaged the port and
airport on Simuelue; 2 meters were observed on the west coast of Nias, and
1 meter at Singkil and Meulaboh; wave heights in fractions of a meter
were observed at several locations around the Indian Ocean.

A mild earthquake occurred at 08:36 PM. This epicenter was located
about 5 miles SSE of Parkfield, CA. The moment magnitude is Mw=3.7.
Maximum intrumental M.M. Intensity of III.
- 17 March, 23:23 PST
A moderate earthquake occurred at 11:23 PM. This epicenter was located
about 37 miles W of Petrolia, CA. The moment magnitude is Mw=4.7.
Maximum intrumental M.M. Intensity of II. Maximum felt M.M. Intensity
of V near Punta Gorda.
- 17 March, 15:21 PST
A mild earthquake occurred at 15:21 PM. This epicenter was located
about 16 miles NW of Ferndale, CA. The local magnitude is ML=3.8.
Maximum M.M. Intensity of III.
- 13 March, 02:09 PST
A moderate earthquake occurred at 02:09 AM. This epicenter was located
about 12 miles SW of Toms Place, CA. The moment magnitude is Mw=4.1.
Maximum M.M. Intensity of IV.
