July 2006 Commentary
- 18 July, 04:41 AM PST
A moderate earthquake was recorded with epicenter located off the coast
of Northern California, about 8 miles WSW of Petrolia, CA. The Moment
Magnitude (Mw) for this earthquake is 5.0. The event was reported felt
from Patrick's Point in the north, to Fort Bragg in the south, and
east to Weaverville. The maximum intensity was V. See the
Instrumental Intensity map and the Community Internet Intensity map; or the
Complete Summary of the earthquake.

A major earthquake occurred south of Java, Indonesia, with epicenter located
about 130 miles NE of Christmas Island and 220 miles S of Jakarta. The Moment Magnitude (Mw) for this earthquake was determined to be 7.7. NEIC
EQ Report There is some evidence that this CMT magnitude from Harvard
might be a high. The Berkeley Surface Wave Magnitude (Ms) is 7.0. and the
USGS Moment Magnitude (Mw) is 7.1. The vertical displacement record from BK.CMB shows two PKP phases of about the same size, about 23 seconds apart. Assuming that there are, indeed,
two separate earthquakes, this would explain the relatively wide range
in magnitudes for the event.
A local tsunami was generated by this earthquake, with wave heights of
up to 2 meters striking along the southern coast of Java. This resulted
in the loss of at least 300 lives, with at least twice that number injured.
There was significant damage to many buildings in this area.
- 6 July, 01:43 PM PST
A mild earthquake was recorded with epicenter located off the coast
of Northern California, about 12 miles W of Fort Ross, CA. The Local

of II along the coast nearest the epicenter.
