At 03:14 AM (PST) a great earthquake occured in the Kuril Islands with epicenter located about 275 miles ENE of Kuril'sk, The moment magnitude (Mw) is 8.3. While only a small tsunami was generated in the nearby Japanese Islands, wave surges of up to around 2 meters caused significant damage on the opposite side of the Pacific in the coastal town of Crescent City, California, several hours later.
