A major earthquake occurred at 04:40 pm (PDT) This event
was located about 4,600 miles SE of Berkeley near the coast of
central Peru, about 30 miles W of Chincha Alta. The moment
magnitude for this earthquake is 8.0. At least 514 people were
killed and 1090 injured, with more than 35,500 builings destroyed.

A major earthquake which occurred at 10:04 am (PDT) This event
was located about 8,700 miles WNW of Berkeley in the Region of Java,
Indonesia, 65 miles ENE of Jakarta The moment magnitude for this
event is 7.5.

A major earthquake which occurred at 10:08 am (PDT) It was
located about 5,900 miles SW of Berkeley in the Vanuatu Islands
about 45 miles ESE of Luganville, Espiritu Santo. The moment
magnitude for this event is 7.2.
