A strong earthquake occurred at 12:42 pm (PST). This epicenter was located off the coast of Oregon, about 158 miles WNW of Bandon,OR, and 208 miles NW of Crescent City, CA. The final moment magnitude for the event, determined by the USGS, is 5.4.

A major earthquake occurred at 07:40 am (PST). This event was located about 3,200 miles ESE of Berkeley in Antofagasta, Chile, about 25 miles ESE of Tocopilla. The moment magnitude for this earthquake is 7.7. At least two people were killed and 45 injured in Tocopilla; twenty were injured at Maria Helena.
