A major earthquake occurred at 11:28 pm (PST). This event was located about 5,700 miles SW of Berkeley in the Region South of Fiji Islands, about 220 miles N of Rao ul Island, Kermadec Islands. The moment magnitude for this earthquake i 7.8. The m aximum modified Mercalli Intensity for the earthquake was (IV) at Nuku`alofa. It was also felt at Mu`a, Neiafu, Pangai and Vaini, Tonga; and at Alof i, Niue.
