A large earthquake occurred at 11:21 AM (PST). This event was located in costa Rica, about 20 miles NNW of San Jose, Costa Rica. The moment magnitude for this event, determined by the U.S. Geological Survey, is 6.1. USGS NEIC information. At least 20 people killed in the Cinchona-Dulce Nombre area. Many of the casualties were caused by landslides. Many people were injured, several buildings were damaged and landslides blocked roads in the area. Electricity was disrupted in parts of San Jose. Felt (VI) at Asuncion, Grecia and San Pablo.

This event was located near the North Coast of Papua, Indonesia, about 55 miles WNW of Manokwari, Papua, Indonesia The moment magnitude for this event, determined by the U.S. Geological Survey, is 7.4. USGS NEIC information. Damage and casualties are included with the event at 11:43 AM (PST). Felt (VII) at Manokwari, (VI) at Sorong, (IV) at Nabire and (III) at Biak.

3 January 2009

A major earthquake occurred at 11:43 AM (PST). This event was located near the North Coast of Papua, Indonesia, about 90 miles WNW of Manokwari, Papua, Indonesia The moment magnitude for this event, determined by the U.S. Geological Survey, is 7.6. USGS NEIC information. At least four people killed at Manokwari and one killed at Sorong. At least 250 people injured, 840 buildings damaged and power outages in West Papua. Felt (VI) at Manokwari and Sorong; (IV) at Nabire and Ransiki.
