The following is a press release by the United States
Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information
Center:
A major earthquake occurred NEAR THE
COAST OF SOUTHERN PERU, about 120 miles (190
km) west of Arequipa or about 375 miles (600 km)
southeast of Lima at 2:33 PM MDT, Jun 23, 2001
(3:33 PM local time in Perú). A PRELIMINARY
MAGNITUDE OF 7.9 WAS COMPUTED FOR THIS
EARTHQUAKE. The magnitude and location may be
revised when additional data and further analysis results
are available.
No tsunami threat from this earthquake remains. According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, small tsunami waves with maximum wave heights up to 2.5 meters were observed in coastal areas of Perú, Chile, and the Galapagos, and caused some damage in Perú shortly following the earthquake.
Many aftershocks, several of them large enough to have been damaging earthquakes in their own right, have been recorded following this event. The largest so far, recorded on 7 July 2001, had a magnitude (MW) of 7.6, determined by Harvard.
**Note: You may notice that each agency gives slightly different magnitudes. Here is an explanation for the variation among the numbers reported.**
