Can earthquakes be predicted?

Earthquake prediction has been a long-term goal in earth sciences. Although many possible precursors have been proposed, no definite and conclusive correlations have yet been established. However, many scientists in many countries continue to be actively engaged in research to improve our understanding of earthquake processes so that risk to humans from earthquakes and their effects can be minimized, even if prediction is still a long way away. The Suggested Reading list has several references on earthquake prediction and earthquake probabilities. Here are several online summaries on earthquake prediction.
