Durant Hall, which houses the East Asian Library, is one of the many buildings on campus - and elsewhere -
constructed with granite. In front of its south
entrance are two Chinese lion figures sculpted from marble.
Marble is a
metamorphic rock
composed of calcite like limestone and travertine.
This marble transformed from limestone or travertine under
high pressure and temperature. The clear evidence of layering seen in the travertine of Giannini Hall is no longer present in the marble.
