Driving

From Interstate 80 (San Francisco, Oakland, Marin)
Exit at University Avenue exit. Continue east on University Avenue approximately 1.5 miles to Oxford Street. Turn right on Oxford Street, pass Bancroft Way, and turn left on Durant Avenue. Our venues are located at various locations on/near the UCB campus, so please see the map below for specific locations.

From Highway 24 (Orinda, Lafayette, Walnut Creek)
Exit at Telegraph Avenue exit. Turn right onto Telegraph Avenue and continue north approximately 2 miles to Bancroft Way. Our venues are located at various locations on/near the UCB campus, so please see the map below for specific locations.

Transit

If traveling by BART, take the Richmond line to the Downtown Berkeley station. Several AC Transit bus lines stop along Bancroft Way and in front of Zellerbach Hall, and other lines stop in front of the Downtown Berkeley BART station, which is a ten- to fifteen-minute walk to our venues (see directions below).

Exit at Downtown Berkeley Station, located at the corner of Center Street and Shattuck Avenue. Walk one block east on Center Street to the “T” at Oxford Street, then turn right on Oxford until Bancroft Way. Turn left on Bancroft to Telegraph Avenue for Zellerbach Hall and Zellerbach Playhouse.

* Please note that the assigned year of the meetings is in keeping with the intended annual meeting date in December, but due to the pandemic, meetings were held in March of the subsequent year. Hence, the 2020 meeting was conducted in March 2021 and the 2021 meeting was conducted in March 2022, and the 2022 meeting was conducted in March 2023. We kept the original year number sequence so we can return to the regular annual heartbeat of post American Geophysical Union December meetings.
We will return to an in-person meeting December 2023 at UC Berkeley.

About Gilbert Club

Since 1983 the Gilbert Club has met on the UC Berkeley campus on the day after the annual meeting in San Francisco of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). The purpose of Gilbert Club, which has no formal affiliation with any organization, is to hear talks and discuss research in geomorphology, especially theoretical geomorphology. The name derives from the geomorphologist Grove Karl Gilbert, but the term "club" is whimsical as Gilbert Club is not itself an organization and there is no membership. Gilbert Club was simply conceived as an opportunity for a growing community to hear major talks, debate new ideas, and encourage community level discussion of issues. The goal is to have faculty, students, government researchers and industry workers meet regularly to spawn collaborations and, frankly, to encourage friendships, on an annual basis. It has always been an open meeting, first advertised through paper mailings and now through email. In recent years attendance has approached 300. We normally have just three or four 50-minute presentations, followed by 20 minutes of discussion and debate. During the last hour or more, depending on how well we keep on schedule, we have "pop ups," during which brief (a few minutes) presentations are made by whomever wishes to do so. We have long breaks and lunch, as well as an evening of pizza and beer to encourage discussion and strengthen communication, when we meet in person.
