There are many resources for current earthquake information on the Web. There are also several resources where you may search earthquake catalogs for a particular time period or region. The list below is not comprehensive; however, it does cover what we believe to be the best Web sites for earthquake information.
This is probably the best resources for the Plot That Quake exercise. It is a list of recent seismicity, generally covering a a 3 week period. Each event has information on the origin time, the location, depth, and magnitude. In addition, each event is linked to page for addition information including maps. Note, however, that this list does not generally include the most current earthquakes. For those, use the next site, which is also provided by NEIC.
This resource provides information on the most recent earthquakes and contains a list of ~ the last 20 earthquakes with information on the location, depth, and magnitude of each event. This list can be printed out and used for the exercise. In addition, each listed event contains a link to more information, including maps. Note: The bottom of the Web page shows a map with the location of the listed events.
This catalog provides a form-based interface for selecting the time period, the location, and magnitude range of events. The CNSS catalog is a global earthquake catalog which updated daily.
This Web page offers several different data bases for searching, covering different areas and different time periods.
