On behalf of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's
Interior (IASPEI) I would like to express my deep condolences for the
recent demise of Prof. Bruce Bolt. As President of IASPEI from 1980 until
1983 Bruce modernized its structure, emphasized a broader range of science,
and brought greater international participation to its General Assemblies.
He served as our IASPEI President with great distinction and energy.
On a personal basis, Bruce actually launched my own career by inviting
me to present the results of my Thesis research at a symposium on Earth structure
that he organized at the 1967 IUGG General Assembly in Zurich. It was a memorable
experience for me and the beginning of a long personal and collegial friendship with
Bruce.
All his friends at IASPEI express their deepest sympathy to Bruce's
family, especially to his wife Beverley, and to his colleagues at
Berkeley for the untimely loss of a respected gentleman and scholar.
With warm regards,
IASPEI President
Bob Engdahl
