Tributes to Bruce Bolt

Susan Hough

A quarter-century might passed since my undergraduate days at Cal but I never did quite get used to being on a first-name basis with Bruce Bolt. As an undergraduate it was simply unthinkable to address him by anything other than Dr. or Professor. This impression, it seems, has stuck. At a university not known for its adherence to formalities, Bruce Bolt was by far the most formal of my professors. He showed up for class in a suit and tie, impeccably prepared, never a minute late. Students who weren't as punctual found themselves knocking on the locked classroom door and admitted with a formal, "good morning" or "good afternoon." Students tended to be punctual. Professor Bolt commanded respect; he also returned it, not only with his commitment to teaching in the classroom but with support and mentoring as well. When I found myself wanting advice about graduate schools or my senior thesis, his was the door I knocked on. I never got to know him well; I'm not sure many people did. But I am so very glad and grateful, to have known him at all. Rest in peace, Professor Bolt.
