I am deeply saddened to hear that Bruce has passed away.
I send my condolences to Beverly, his family, his friends,
his colleagues.
Bruce Bolt was an inspirational advisor – he certainly
contributed greatly to the sense of excitement and (hope for)
discovery I feel when immersed in scientific studies or
confronted with new observations.
Amongst many memories of working with him, I recall how he
emphasised that one should always look for anomalies in
the data – that is how new discoveries are made.
And I recall him being particularly impressed that at the
time of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, certain
observers were prepared with accurate timepieces,
pen and paper available (even while asleep), and
had the clarity of mind to record the times and
character of the shocks and waves.
I now live far from Berkeley; I will miss very much not
having scientific, political and historical discussions
with Bruce Bolt during my future visits to California.
