Tributes to Bruce Bolt

Valerie Raymond

I had the privilege to be Bruce Bolt's editor at W.H. Freeman over the past four years. During that time period, he wrote the fifth edition of Earthquakes, including a recent update celebrating the centennial of the 1906 "Big One." Bruce was a great scientist and story teller rolled into one, making my job very easy. He provided for me the rare bit of glamour in modern publishing - a chance to sit over a good meal, with a brilliant guest, and talk about everything from science to family to literature. He even made me feel safe from earthquakes in California. For the opportunity I had to learn from this great man, I am truly grateful.
