Tributes to Bruce Bolt

Ben Tsai

I first got to know Bruce Bolt in person during a 1978 strong motion workshop at Honolulu. It was followed by many years of fruitful collaboration in the SMART1 Array Program with Bruce, Joe Penzien, Sheng-Tau Mao and myself as the co-PI's. During this period, I spent a summer at the Seismographic Station. I was really impressed by the tremendous dedication and loyalty of the staff under Bruce's leadership. This caused me to think deeply how should I best lead the then young and upcoming Institute of Earth Sciences in Taiwan. Later during the early 1990's when the Central Weather Bureau decided to embark on a major strong motion instrumentation program for the whole island of Taiwan, Bruce was asked to chair the Advisory Committee on Instrumentation, including Tony Shakal, Gerry Brady and Willie Lee, among others, as its members. He was enthusiastic and generous to offer his advice and foresight which were proven so superbly by the Chi-Chi dataset. Finally, Bruce was scheduled to give a keynote speech on "Teaching Geophysics as a Modern Basis of Science" on August 3 in Taipei. Many of his friends here will miss him dearly. My sympathy goes out to Beverley and the rest of his family.
