Tributes to Bruce Bolt
- Shi Yaolin, Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences
-
Bruce Bolt is a dear friend of Chinese seismologists. He was among the first group of US scientists who visited China in the late 70’s even before late president Nixon visited China. He hosted quite a number of Chinese scholars in the Berkeley Seismological Station in subsequent years. He also went to China again for several times, visited may institutes and universities, gave talks and discussions with Chinese seismologists, made field trips to some major seismic areas, etc. His efforts helped Chinese seismology to rejoin the international academic community after the interruption of Chinese cultural revolution. His book “Earthquakes” and “Earthquakes and Geological Discovery” have been translated into Chinese, and became popular.
I went to U C Berkeley in 1980 for Ph. D. degree, and Bruce Bolt has been a mentor and friend of mine. He and I collaborated with a paper “The standard error of frequency-magnitude b-value” published in BSSA in 1982, which is among my first papers published in international journals. He will always live in my memory- energic, confident, and humorous.
