Tom McEvilly

Feb 22 2002

The faculty, staff, and students of the BSL mourn the loss of Tom McEvilly, who passed away after a fight with cancer.

To the end he remained intensely interested and involved in his work, and through his work he touched the lives of many.

A memorial service was held in Belleville, Illinois, on March 2nd at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. A memorial took place on April 22 in Berkeley.

We miss him very much.

Tom McEvilly
1934-2002

Tom's family has requested that the Department of Earth and Planetary Science establish a Graduate Student Fellowship in Seismology in his memory. To this goal, the Department is accepting contributions made out to "The Regents of the University of California" and addressed to: Susan Torrano, Department of Earth and Planetary Science, 307 McCone Hall, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720-4767

Although it is difficulty to summarize a career which spans over 40 years in a few words, this press release touches on the highlights of Tom's professional - and personal - life. We also want to share a few photographs from the BSL archive. We are gathering tributes and memories from Tom's colleagues and friends.

Other notices about Tom:

Two memorials of Tom have appeared in the last few months, one in EOS and another in Seismological Research Letters. These are not currently available online, but the references are given below:

As part of the memorial service in April, Peggy Gennaro in the Department of Earth and Planetary Science compiled a list of Tom's publications and biographical information. The poster boards with these materials and photographs of Tom are on display in the 2nd floor of McCone Hall.

Tom touched the lives of many students at UC Berkeley over the years through his teaching and advising. We have compiled an incomplete list.

The Parkfield High Resolution Seismic Network and Hayward Fault Network are important and on-going legacies of Tom's research at UC Berkeley. He was also an important contributor to the Mini-Plate Boundary Observatory Project, which is currently underway.
