Tom and I arrived at Berkeley at about the same time and I got to know him better shortly after the 1966 Parkfield earthquake. Tom, fellow graduate students John Filson and Roger Stuart, and I were collecting felt reports in surrounding towns and ended up late one night in a bar in Avenal. Tom, the faculty member, got carded. We didn't. Tom was always young -in ideas, spirit, and enthusiasm. He had a special knack for communicating to his students his enthusiasm for his science.
