I've known Tom for just over ten years - a relatively short time compared to many. I too was charmed by the impish grin, the devilish sense of humor, and his great enjoyment of life.
He contributed enormously to my enjoyment of working at Berkeley. Talking with Tom - from serious discussions about networks to informal lessons in the seismological history to idle gossip about our colleagues to his excitement about the newest results at Parkfield - was always a pleasure.
I can see him now, standing in my doorway, leaning against the frame, with a suggestion or new idea. Tom was always provocative - and never boring. Working with him at the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory was great fun.
Tom, I miss you.
