Tom is a part of the lore here at Hafner Vineyard where he visited several times and whose wines he enjoyed more often. Here is the McEvilly contribution to that lore:
Tom and a fellow seismologist from the Department of the Interior were visiting the winery here in Alexander Valley. As we were leaving the wine caves in the hill behind the winery, I told them that the cave builder said the caves were the safest place to be in an earthquake.Tom gave the Interior seismologist a long look, then turned back to me and said, "Dick,if an earthquake comes, you go to the caves, we're going to the vineyard!" This story is told and retold to visitors...but only after they have left the caves.
In warm memories, Dick and the rest of the Hafner family
