Tributes to Tom McEvilly

Peter W. Rodgers

Tom was a great man. I was fortunate to be his first graduate student at the Seismographic Station at the Univ. of Calif. Berkeley, CA. Tom had an astounding breadth of knowledge of geophysics and engineering and was wonderful in verbal technical exchanges, always carried out with a component of Irish humor and triviae. An example of which follows:

This incident occurred aboard an airliner landing at 59K on our way to an AGU meeting in Washington D.C. The plane banked coming to JFK with the sun projecting a circular bright spot onto the opposite wall. As the turn continued, the bright circular spot finally struck Tom fill in the face! "I know how a galvanometer feels", followed by laughter. Passengers were John Filson, myself, Tom, and Frank Press. This is just one incident out of hundreds from this marvelous man with a pixie sense of humor.

Goodbye Tom - I know you are up there observing us all. Again, I am appreciative of your and Dottie's visit here at the Santa Barbara Convalescent Hospital. It was great seeing you both.
