1934-2002

Dear Friends, Colleagues and Family,

On April 22, we are gathering in the Great Hall of the Faculty Club to honor, recall, and celebrate the life and times of Tom McEvilly. Tom died on February 22, 2002, after an eight-month fight with cancer. To the last day, he remained cheerful and full of the optimism that so filled our lives.

His cheerfulness, love of life and people, endeared him to those who cared for and visited with him throughout his illness. In his living and in his dying, he was an inspiration to his family and friends.

All are invited, and we encourage you to share with us your thoughts in various ways. A Web site has been established where photographs and press releases are available, and where you can write tributes to Tom for others to see and to be read at the Celebration on April 22. And, of course, we will also welcome comments from individual attendees at the Celebration.

Please come to reflect and to embrace the good memories we share.

To preserve his memory, Tom's family has requested that the Department establish a Graduate Student Fellowship in Seismology in his name. To this goal, the Department is receiving contributions to be made out to "The Regents of the University of California". Letters can be addressed to Susan Torrano, Department of Earth Planetary Science, University of California, Berkeley, CA, 94720-4767.

By April 16, please RSVP to Pat Mimoto at pmimoto@uclink4.berkeley.edu or 510-642-9299. Directions to the Faculty Club are available as well as a general campus map and parking information.
