Feb 27 2009
Since Feb. 27, the BSL's and MBARI's ocean bottom seismometer station, MOBB, is sending data to our datacenter in realtime. This is the culmination of a long effort on the part of both institutions. In the week before it was connected to the ocean bottom MARS science node, a 3 km long power and data cable was laid out to the MOBB site. The seismogram below shows the recording from M6.5 earthquake on Mar. 6, 2009 North of Svalbard. The upper three traces are from MOBB, the bottom three from the closest BDSN station, SAO. The data were filtered between 0.005 and 0.1 Hz. See the MOBB overview page and our blog for more on the MOBB insallation.

Discovery Finds New Trigger For San Andreas Fault (video)
New research by paleoseismologist Chris Goldfinger at OSU points to large quakes in Cascadia triggering quakes on the San Andreas Fault. Rupturing from the north, such a quake could cause shaking stronger than that of the 1906 quake. BSL seismologist Peggy Hellweg explains.

BSL's BK network installation commended in recent Seismological Research Letters article
"Our analysis indicates that the stations of the Berkeley network are unusually well oriented; for only two of the 20 stations do we obtain correction angles larger than 3 degrees." - Ekstrom, G. and R. Professor Roland Burgmann has been awarded the 2005 Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel prize of the Alexander Humboldt Foundation for his outstanding contributions to research and scholarship. Through his research work on earthquakes and crustal motions with the help of satellite observations, Professor Burgmann belongs among the international leaders in state of the art research. Professor Roland Burgmann will spend several months in summer 2005 as guest of the Postdam Geophysical Research Institute in the framework of a research collaboration.
