Education and Outreach

Professional development workshop for teachers

The BSL is involved in a variety of outreach activities, ranging from lectures and lab tours to educational displays and the development of classroom materials for K-12 teachers. We maintain an earthquake information tape (510-642-2160) and an extensive set of Web pages (duh!), providing basic earthquake and seismic hazard information for northern and central California.

Earthquake Information

The BSL collaborates with the USGS Menlo Park as part of the California Integrated Seismic Network to provide earthquake information on recent events.

The BSL also provides weekly, monthly, and annual maps of seismicity. BSL Analyst Rick McKenzie files an earthquake commentary and he often updates the Earthquake Hot Line. You can see current seismograms from our network or make your own. We also produce special reports on earthquakes of interest.

General information on earthquakes and faults

The BSL maintains a list of Frequently Asked Questions, which is currently being updated and revised. Specific information on Bay Area faults and earthquakes is available as is information on Bay Area earthquake resources. In particular, the Hayward fault is near and dear to our hearts - and we have a virtual tour of UC Berkeley.

In addition, the BSL has compiled resources on earthquake preparedness, suggested reading, and other links of interest.

K-12 Educational resources

The BSL has been involved in the development of Earth science curriculum as part of the Interactive University Project. Although this project is no longer funded, the materials are still available.

The Seismological Laboratory offers tours upon appointment. Please contact Rick McKenzie at 510-642-3977 to schedule a visit.

For information on graduate admissions, please contact the Department of Earth and Planetary Science.
