Earthquake Maps

In order to facilitate this lesson, we have created template maps and examples of earthquake lists and solutions. We have provided 3 types of World maps: Robinson, Mollweide, and Mercator.

For each projection, we have provided a template map with landmasses, without landmasses, and with bathymetry. We have added a map showing the location of plate boundaries and recent volcanoes. Finally, we have selected several examples of earthquake lists and solution maps.

For a description of the entries in the earthquake lists, see the following explanation.

Note: In these figures, the earthquakes are not plotted in time order. Because the number of shallow earthquakes exceeds the number of deep events, we have plotted the intermediate and deep focus events last.

Other examples of template maps and earthquake lists may be found in the earthquake plots created from the CNSS catalog.

Good sources of wall maps for the classroom include the National Geographic Society, which has a number of maps of different scales. The USGS also produces a number of maps useful for the classroom.
