The entrance to Giannini Hall, which
houses the offices of the
College
of Natural Resources, has a
façade of travertine.
Travertine is a
sedimentary rock composed of the mineral calcite
(CaCO3).
It forms in hot springs (e.g.those at Yellowstone National Park) and was the most important
building material in ancient Rome. Calcite
can be identified by its hardness and an
acid test.
