The CIDER-II Synthesis Center proposal to the NSF/FESD program has been funded for 5 years. We are continuing the summer programs, which are now held every year, alternating "deep" and "shallow" earth themes. We have been launching new activities, among which support for multi-disciplinary working groups on targeted topics, more sustained support for student research groups formed during the summer programs, a CIDER wiki and archival of materials assembled during the summer programs, as well as an annual "post-AGU" workshop. The first CIDER post-AGU workshop was held on Dec 10, 2011.

This one day workshop will serve as a kick-off for the CIDER 2013 Summer Program, aand more generally, brainstorming about future CIDER programs and activities.

The workshop will feature 4 keynote lectures, in CIDER style (ample time for questions and discussion) on topics related to the themes of the recent 2012 Summer program and the upcoming 2013 Summer program: "From mantle to crust: Continental formation and destruction" Speakers: Rick Carlson (DTM), Karen Fischer (Brown), David Rubie (Bayreuth), Adrian Lenardic (Rice).

It will also feature presentations by former CIDER research groups, formed during the 2010 and 2011 summer programs, as well as reports from research groups formed during the 2012 Summer Programs. Presenters: TBD

The workshop is open to all - we encourage attendance by both former CIDER junior and senior participants, and those that haven't experienced CIDER yet but would like to try it out. Please apply by November 1st, 2012. For planning purposes, we need to have a head count.

Workshop Organizers: Barbara Romanowicz, Marc Hirschmann, Cin Ty Lee and the CIDER ExCom.
