He 2 CONC attended high school for a while there before joining the U.S. Navy 2 CONC shortly after WW II began. He tried to joint the Navy on his 17th 2 CONC birthday, October 3, 1943, the minimum age then, but had no birth 2 CONC certificate. He eventually found the church where he was baptized, 2 CONC and it had a baptismal record that had all the requisite information, 2 CONC allowing him to join the Navy. 2 CONT 2 CONT After joining the Navy, Edwin was sent to the Great Lakes Naval 2 CONC Training Center for what amounted to basic training. It lasted only 2 CONC three weeks rather than the usual six weeks because of the war. Of 2 CONC the approximately 100 in his basic training class, three were selected 2 CONC for further schooling. Edwin was selected for torpedo school, which 2 CONC he attended for about six weeks. He was then sent to the Aleutian 2 CONC Islands in Alaska, shortly after the Japanese had left, where he 2 CONC remained from about early 1944 to May 1995. While there he spent most 2 CONC of his time on patrol duty, going about 200-300 miles out from base. 2 CONC In August 1945, just as the war ended in Japan, he was sent to the 2 CONC south Pacific, where he continued as a torpedo man third-class. He 2 CONC was discharged from the Navy in May 1946 in California, where he took 2 CONC a bus back to Pittsburgh. 2 CONT 2 CONT After leaving returning to Pittsburgh, Edwin finished high school, 2 CONC graduating in 1947 with training as a printer. He then went to work 2 CONC for the Valley Journal newspaper weekly in Millvale, PA, where he met 2 CONC Marian Myers. They were engaged to be married in December 1947. At 2 CONC about that time, Edwin and Marian decided that they would leave 2 CONC Pittsburgh, PA, after marriage, finding jobs elsewhere. They 2 CONC considered a small town in Ohio just across the Pennsylvania border. 2 CONT 2 CONT However, in about January 1948, Gordon Myers, Marian's uncle, said 2 CONC that he needed help in his printing shop in Oil City, PA, and Edwin 2 CONC moved to Oil City to help Gordon out. Within a week or so, Gordon had 2 CONC killed a man and was put in jail. Edwin continued to run the printing 2 CONC shop and living in a little apartment above the printing shop until 2 CONC his marriage in August 1948, after which time his wife Marian joined 2 CONC him in the print shop. 2 CONT 2 CONT Right after his marriage to Marian Myers in 1948, the two of them 2 CONC moved to Blairs Corners, PA, from which Edwin commuted to Oil City to 2 CONC work in the print shop of Marian's uncle, Gordon Myers. They moved to 2 CONC Oil City in about 1950 and lived in a house on First Street until the 2 CONC fall of 1951, when they bought an old store at 901 Central Avenue, at 2 CONC which place they lived until they sold the house in about 1992. 2 CONT 2 CONT Edwin worked as a printer in the print shop in the basement of 901 2 CONC Central Avenue until the early-1960s, at which time he worked at Lug N 2 CONC Tug, a lumber and hardware store. In 1963 Edwin almost died of 2 CONC cancer, but miraculously recovered. James S. Myers, the youngest of a family of 2 CONC thirteen children, was born on the 9th day of June, 1813. He remained 2 CONC with his parents until January 12, 1828, at which time he came to 2 CONC Franklin, his father having 2 CONT indentured him to Nathaniel Cary to learn the tailor's trade. After 2 CONC becoming proficient in that calling, he worked three years as a 2 CONC journeyman tailor at Brownsville, Blairsville, and other places in the 2 CONC western part of the state, and in 1832 located in Franklin, opening a 2 CONC shop on Thirteenth street, near Liberty, where he carried on a 2 CONC successful business for some years.
