Research Interests

Use of waveform data to investigate seismic source, wave propagation, and Earth structure problems. Study of historic earthquake seismograms. Development of robust automated procedures to analyze earthquakes as they occur and to report strong shaking levels on a local and regional scale. Study of seismic sources including earthquakes, nuclear explosions and exotic events. Develop realistic Earth structure models to explain observed strong motion data of recent large earthquakes and to predict the distribution of strong ground motions for future earthquakes. Current research is focussed on nuclear event discrimination using regional distance moment tensors, investigating anomalous seismic radiation of Mammoth Lakes, CA, events, the development of a regional distance methodology to rapidly determine near-source strong ground motion shaking levels, investigation of 3D crustal structure of the Mendocino Triple Junction region, and the development of a 3D Earth model of the greater San Francisco bay area.
