to The University of Wisconsin Department of Geology and Geophysics
"Gems and Precious Stones" (Geology 306) on-line class
Over the past few years we have had non-Madison students (distance education) take this class. It is necessary for the student to identify a proctor for the two examinations. The students must take the course in parallel with Madison-based students. The semester starts January, 20 1999.
First step: you must register for the course. To do this:
CONTACT THE UNIVERSITY, providing the information requested in this form.
Please note Geology 306 is delivered in
English. Non-native speakers should have English reading and writing
proficiency equivalent to a TOEFL score of approximately 550 (213 on the
computer based test).
All International Students enrolled in the University of Wisconsin-Madison, except those taking Internet courses from outside the Country, are required to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP). To receive an exemption, you must file a waiver form. You may download the form from the University Health Service website. Send the form, with a brief note explaining that you will be outside the country for the duration of your Internet course, to University Health Services, Student Health Insurance Program, 1552 University Avenue, Madison WI 53705, U.S.A. Failure to file this waiver will result in your being billed for SHIP and unable to access your university records if you need evidence that you have earned UW-Madison credit.
NOW please read the introductory material provided for Madison-based students. Please note that the majority of Madison-based students who take this course do NOT attend class. This is an option many students favor because of the increased flexibility provided by on-line materials. The only distinction between these Madison-based and non-Madison-based students in that the two examinations must be faxed to an appropriate proctor (or another special arrangement must be made) in order for the class to be taken for credit by a truly distance student.
