Directions to Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS):
For the Bart folks, please make every effort to make the special bus as that will make your life sweet and easy. This just means making sure you get to the Berkeley Bart Stop by 8:10 or 8:40 at the latest. The cafe at the Lawrence Hall of Science opens at 9 am for you expresso dependents but best come precaffeinated. We will have the early break with brew at the ready..
1) By BART:
Take the Richmond line to the 'Berkeley' station, exit by the central escalator. You will need to take at least one campus bus to get up the hill to LHS; there are three options.
a) A special campus shuttle bus which goes directly to LHS will leave the Berkeley BART station area at 8:15 and 8:45 AM. These two buses will have a 'Gilbert Club' sign in the window and seat 31 people. The bus stop is in front of the Bank of America, on the NE corner of Shattuck and Center. To get there from the BART station escalator exit you'll need to cross both Shattuck (the main street) and Center streets. The bus costs 75 cents - please bring change!
b) If you can't make the 8:15 or 8:45 buses, you can make the same trip using two buses. The regular campus Perimeter Shuttle stops at the Bank of America Building (see above) every 8 minutes all day. Take that bus to the Hearst Mining Circle on campus where you change to the Hill Shuttle. The Hill Shuttle leaves at 8:50, 9:10, 9:30, and 9:50 AM, and then every 30 minutes, at 15 and 45 minutes after the hour, for the rest of the day. The first bus costs 25 cents, the second costs 50 cents - please bring change! The shuttle can also be used to return to BART if you need to leave early.
c) You can also walk from the BART station to the Hearst Mining Circle and take the Hill Shuttle from there. From the BART escalator exit, head east, crossing Shattuck and proceed one block on Center Street to the West entrance to campus. Follow the roadway (where cars travel - not any of the wide pedestrian paths, which diverge) as it winds generally eastward, up the hill through campus. The roadway will eventually turn south (toward the tower) as it passes the main library with a broad sloping grassy area on the right ('memorial glade'). Turn left onto an intersecting roadway which heads east and you'll soon see on your left the Hearst Mining Circle (the campus bus terminal) where you can catch the Hill Shuttle - in front of the Hearst Mining building on the north side of the circle. You will have gotten some exercise and saved yourself 25 cents.
2) By car:
Take the University Avenue exit
off I-80 (which is also I-580). If you're coming from San Francisco, take
the Bay Bridge, keep to the left to get on I-80 east (same as I-580 west,
go figure...). Proceed east on University Ave. about 2 miles until it ends
at Oxford Street, the west campus entrance. Do NOT enter campus but turn
left on Oxford and then take the first right onto Hearst Avenue, which
runs along the north perimeter of campus. The second stop light will be
Gayley Road, turn right. Turn left at the first stop sign onto Stadium
Rimway. Turn left at the next stop sign onto Centennial Drive. Climb the
hill about 1 mile, LHS will be on your left, parking on both your right
and left. Parking costs $4.00 for the day. You need to pay at machines,
which are scattered about the parking lots. Make sure to note the number
of your parking stall before leaving your car; the machines will ask for
your parking stall number. You will receive a receipt at the machine, but
you do NOT need to return to your car to display the receipt.
