Neat stuff in the Field

Salton Sea mud volcanoes, June 2021

In June 2021 Max Rudolph (now faculty at UC Davis) visited the mud volcanoes (really, hydrothermal vents) at the southern end of the Salton Sea in California's Imperial Valley to document if and how they responded to a nearby magnitude 5.3 earthquake. We have been monitoring these features since 2010 to understand how they erupt, in particular, how and why they respond to earthquakes.

We measured gas flux and temperature. Over the past decade water levels have dropped so much that accessing the vents and collecting data is difficult to impossible.

lower
In 2012 a brand new feature formed. When first documented it was a depression about 1 m deep. By 2021 it created a conical mound.

lower
Water level in the Salton Sea (data from the USGS). Decreasing water levels in the Sea also lead to decreased water levels at the mud volcanoes.
