The Great Berkeley ShakeOut & Preparedness Fair 2025
Ready for the next big earthquake?
Practice your Drop (or Lock), Cover, and Hold on this ShakeOut at 10:16 am on October 16 and join us after to learn about the earthquakes in our backyard.
We'll also have cuddly animals and plenty of games as well as demonstrations and giveaways to help fill up those emergency kits and help us shake-up this ShakeOut.
Event Details:
- Where: Dwinelle Plaza, UC Berkeley Campus
- When: 11 am to 2 pm Thursday October 16
Why it matters:
It's no secret that the Hayward Fault intersects the UC Berkeley campus (and if you didn't know, check out Horst Rademacher's Hayward Fault Tour). According to UCERF3, the Hayward Fault has a 33% likelihood of having a magnitude 6.7 or greater earthquake by 2043. With the possibility of a big earthquake at any moment, it's important to understand what can be done before and during an earthquake to reduce injury and what can be done after to ease recovery.
ShakeOut presents an opportunity for us to connect as a community, encourage earthquake preparedness, and share information with Berkeley residents and stakeholders. This event will bring together scientists, emergency management, and community response with campus members and the neighborhood community to foster earthquake resilience and promote earthquake safety.
Make the most of this year's ShakeOut!
- Learn more about what you can do to prepare. Secure any items that can fall during shaking long before an earthquake happens.
- Make an emergency kit or go bag. If you already have one, double-check to make sure nothing has expired!
- Download the MyShake App! MyShake users will be sent a test drill at 10:16 AM on October 16. Audio and visuals will be slightly different than real alerts. For more info on the test alert, visit https://bit.ly/4gUfFg0.
- Practice when you get the test alert! You'll build muscle memory by remembering to Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
- There's also Lock, Cover, and Hold On! Lock any mobility devices you may be using, such as a wheelchair or walker, and cover your neck until shaking stops. For more specific information on what to do during shaking or when you get an early warning alert depending on your mobility, we recommend this video: If You Have a Mobility Disability (Earthquake Safety Video Series).
